IF YOU HAVE FOUND A CAT:  Please contact your local police department, animal control officer, or the animal shelter in your area.  You may also post on our Facebook Page or Email Us or call 207-999-1075. DO NOT DROP OFF THE CAT OR KITTENS TO OUR ADOPTION CENTER. THERE WILL NOT BE ANYONE THERE WHO CAN ACCEPT THEM. SURRENDERS MUST BE BY APPOINTMENT.

Things You Should Know About Found Cats or Kittens

Observation is the most important thing you can do to help. We advise not approaching the cat – even if there are kittens – unless they are in obvious danger or distress. Be cautious with an injured cat as they may strike out – and you could suffer an unpleasant wound.  A truly feral cat will not allow you to approach and will strike out.

Mother with kittens: Very young kittens need their mother’s milk for their immune system. If a kitten is very young (would fit in your hand, eyes closed) please DO NOT attempt to take it away from the mother. Provide food at a safe distance and observe the situation. Call your local animal control person, police or the shelter contracted by your town. It is best to arrange for the capture of the mother with kittens together. If the mother is frightened by humans, she will move the babies. If she smells a human on her babies, she may abandon it.

If the kittens are older – they’re walking and playing – they will need to be captured before they become old enough to start mating. Provide food at a safe distance and contact the authorities.

If the authorities cannot provide help, then you may call HHPR at 999-1075. Be sure to leave a number where you can be reached. A volunteer will get back to you within 24 hours. We will work with you to trap the cat and/or kittens and get them the help they need. Please continue to put food out so that the cat will return to that location, making it easier to humanely trap them.
